Kanpur, 28 December, 2021: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur held its 54th Convocation on December 28, 2021 in a hybrid mode with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi as the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath was present as the Guest of Honour.

Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 53rd Convocation was held fully virtually for the first time in the history of IIT Kanpur. This year, the event was held in a hybrid mode. While a total of about 880 students out of the total of 1723 students receiving their degrees attended the convocation in-person on the campus, the remaining students joined the event remotely.

Gracing the occasion, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said, “I congratulate you and especially your parents on this glorious day of your life. Once you step outside the college, a lot of people will come to you with shortcuts to success. But when asked to choose between comfort and challenge, I would advise you all to go for the latter. ”
“The one who faces challenges and overcomes them with efficient solutions is the one who scales the greatest heights. It is time for India to be self-reliant. We’ve already lost precious time over the years; we shall not waste any more time. As Swami Vivekananda said, “Every nation has a message to deliver, a mission to fulfil, a destiny to reach.”, If we’re not self-reliant, then how will our nation fulfil its goal and reach its destiny? Hence, I urge you show the same restlessness in contributing towards making India self-reliant in this technology-driven 21st century.”

Also, praising the contribution of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country, he said that India has emerged as a mega start-up hub on a global basis and this has been achieved with the help of the students from IITs. Lauding IIT Kanpur’s contribution towards developing technology developments, he said that the students present at the event have made this possible. He lauded the recent launch of the world’s first floating CNG-filling station at Khidkiya Ghat, Varanasi, by an IIT Kanpur incubated company. Father’s Pride

Father and son walking on an emoty country road and holding hands

Raina Wahaj

Memories are beautiful sitting at the airport she thought – Lessons to learn and tears are what they brought !

Wondering about her childhood days – When mumma scolded her to mend her ways – Daddy’s consolation ice cream were her only pleasure – Now these memories are her only treasure!

She held her father’s fingers and learnt how to walk-He was the one who taught her how to talk – He sang for her the sweetest lullaby-And always inspired her to touch the sky!

Stories about their picnic at the side of the lake,
Were the most heart touching stories she could ever make.
At her birthday night he stayed awake,
To bake her special chocolate flavoured cake !

To fulfill her wishes and all her desires,
Sometimes also to buy her favourite attires.
Never did he hesitate to wear the same shirt ,

But What he cared about was to iron her school’s skirt !
He stayed up late to make coffee on her exam night!
Desperately waited for the day when her Engine would ignite!
When society asked him to work on her looks,

He chose to buy her enormous books.
When she interviewd for her job,
Everyone could hear his heart throb.
The day came when she was selected,
Joy in his sparking eyes clearly reflected.

She saw the car crash with her own eyes!
Never could She forget the day of her father’s demise !
Capt wake up wake up and take off the flight,
It is time for you to hit the runway’s light.
She missed her father with tears in her eyes-The hardest part of life are the unsaid goodbyes!

This time she was not the wedding bride. But indeed her father’s pride !
But indeed her father’s pride !!

G.P. VARMA
Kanpur December 15– In a Foundation for Innovation and Research in Science and Technology (FIRST-IITK), IIT Kanpur has developed a portable soil testing device that can detect soil health in just 90 seconds through an embedded mobile application.

The rapid soil testing device will assist individual farmers for obtaining soil health parameters of agricultural fields with recommended dose of fertilizers. The technology titled Portable Soil Testing Device “Bhu Parikshak” is transferred to an agritech company named AgroNxt Services Pvt. Ltd.

This first-of-its-kind novel invention is based on Near Infrared Spectroscopy technology that provides real time soil analysis report on smart phones with an embedded mobile application named Bhu Parikshak available on Google Play Store. The device can detect six important soil parameters namely – Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Organic Carbon, Clay contents and Cation Exchange Capacity.

It also recommends the required dose of fertilizers for the field and crops. The mobile application is made user friendly through the user interface which is available in local languages, such that even a class 8th pass person can easily handle the device and the mobile application. The device can test upto 1 Lakh soil test samples, which is the highest testing capability of a soil testing device among its predecessors.

The technology is transferred to Agronxt with an objective of manufacturing the device through bulk production, eventually benefiting the farmers.

The technology licensing agreement was formally signed between IIT Kanpur and AgroNxt Services on 11th December, 2021. The MoU exchange ceremony was graced by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director IIT Kanpur and Mr. Rajat Vardhan, Director AgroNxt Services. Prof. Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, Prof. A R Harish and Mr. Ravi Pandey from IIT Kanpur also joined the agreement signing ceremony.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur said, “Farmers are our caretakers. But they face a lot of hardships. One such hardship is getting their soil tested and wait for the results for days. That will not be a hassle anymore. I am delighted for the team from IIT Kanpur for developing such a novel device that will assist individual farmers in assessing the health of their soil in almost no time. This is another step towards achieving the goal of technology self-reliance that IIT Kanpur thrives for.”

The invention is developed by a team of inventors at IIT Kanpur, consisting of Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh from Department of Chemical Engineering, Mr. Pallav Prince, Mr. Ashar Ahmad, Mr. Yashasvi Khemani and Mohd. Aamir Khan. The idea for the invention arose from the general observation of the common problem faced by farmers, wherein a farmer has to wait upto a fortnight for getting the soil health cards from distant district soil testing laboratories, which takes a considerable workforce and time.

The portable and wireless soil testing device requires a mere 5 grams of dry soil sample for detecting macronutrients present in the soil. Once the soil is poured into the 5 cm long cylindrical shaped device, it connects itself with the mobile through Bluetooth, and starts analyzing the soil for 90 seconds. After the analysis, the results appear on the screen in the form of a soil health report, which is accessible on Bhu Parikshak cloud service with unique ID. The report also comes with a recommended dose of fertilizers.

Highlights
The portable soil testing device developed by IIT Kanpur is named Bhu-Parikshak .

It is a first-of-its-kind device that can detect soil health in just 90 seconds .

The device can test upto 1 Lakh soil test samples, the highest testing capability recorded in such devices so far.

E-Government Procurement (e-GP) systems cater to the procurement and tendering requirements of various government departments and organizations.

Though e-GP systems have contributed to enhanced efficiency and transparency in government procurement, there is potential for further advancement of the existing systems.

This partnership aims to ease the hassle of the existing systems by making the more than 50 operational e-GP systems across the country interoperable, which, up till now, work in silos.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT-K said, “We have a dynamic space within the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) that helps in breeding innovations. All the incubatees of the SIIC have been contributing to the country in various means, and in time of crucial need. I am delighted for the team of CRUBN, who have come forward to help in developing a key blockchain network across the country that would enrich the existing e-governance systems. This will help IIT-K in realising the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in state-of-the-art technologies and making India a technology super power” .

This blockchain network will be used for validating the claims of suppliers along with their identities. The proposed system will connect all the e-GP systems through a network, which will help retrieve and validate relevant supplier data between various e-GP Systems that are in use within India.

The proposed system will also digitize Bank guarantees by powering them using the trust-based automation of Blockchain. When fully operational, this system will be a pan-India system that would reduce the time and cost associated with public procurements made using e-GP systems.

Highlights of the project:
• The blockchain network will be governed by the terms and conditions decided by the consortium of the e-GP Systems across the country.

• The blockchain system can be used as the national de-duplicated supplier data store.

• Any e-GP system can depend upon the trust that Blockchain guarantees to authenticate supplier details. This will potentially save enormous costs associated with tender processing and make the process simpler and efficient.

• Bank guarantees will also be pushed to this system in a tokenized & privacy-preserving manner to maintain integrity.

• Tokenization of Bank guarantees would mean that they will become a more acceptable instrument of transaction than they are now.
