Now, barbers would have additional source of income by selling the cut hair of their customers. On the other hand the problem of disposing the hair safely would also be solved.

This would be possible under an ambitious project of The Bhartiya Harit Khadi Gramodyog Sansthan (BHKGS) a unit of Board for Khadi and Gramodyog . The BHKGS has proposed to set up cut hair collection centers in ten districts of the state of Uttar Pradesh. These centers would purchase one kilogram of cut hair for rupees forty.

The centers are expected to be set up by March 2019 according to the minister for Khadi Gramodyog Satyadeo Pachauri. An memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed with a company for installing the plant for producing amino acid from hair, cow urine and cow dung he informed.

The amino acid is required organic manure, pesticides and insecticides.

“After two years hectic research on the project we have been able to produce the amino acid with human hair, cow dung and cow urine,” says Controller of the Training Program at the BHKGS Vijay Raj.

“We are imparting training to the people in running the collection centers and producing amino acid. In the first phase the centers would be set up in Kanpur City, Kanpur Dehat, Lucknow, Banda, Sitapur, Hardoi, and Faizabad. Later more such centers would be opened in other districts of the state,” Rai says.

“There is no dearth of orders. We have started getting orders for the amino acid. Recently a company in has asked to supply about 50000 liters,” Rai says.

A survey has revealed that over eight hundred kilogram of hair is thrown as waste in the big cities daily. This could prove to be potential raw material for producing amino acid which has several uses, Rai says.
